ChatGPT Study Practice: Explain It in Your Own Words
Explain a concept before looking at your notes, then compare your explanation with a trusted reference. Use questions and hints to revise it yourself.
Use your explanation to locate the gap
Recognizing a definition is different from explaining it. Write a short explanation in your own words, then use ChatGPT to compare it with a reference you trust. The useful result is a specific question to work on, not a polished answer to memorize.
Choose one small concept. You should be able to name the meaning, a condition and an example. The exercise reveals what appears in your explanation; it cannot prove complete mastery or replace your teacher’s assessment.
1. Write first, then bring in the reference
Without looking back, write three to five sentences for a beginner. Keep the first version rather than improving it with AI immediately. Mark uncertainty and number sentences E1 and E2.
Next, add a short authorized reference passage with IDs S1 and S2. Include its conditions, not just the headline definition. Follow your course’s AI rules and remove personal information from materials you share.
- Choose one concept rather than a whole chapter.
- Keep your own first attempt separate from the source.
- State what the supplied reference does not cover.
2. Practice with mean and median
This is a fictional learner’s attempt using elementary arithmetic. The reference defines the arithmetic mean and the median for an odd number of values; it does not cover every statistical situation.
The data are 1, 2, 3, 4 and 20. E1 says “The mean is the middle value after sorting.” E2 says “The mean of these values is 3.” These sentences give the reviewer something concrete to check.
| Reference | Practice material |
|---|---|
| S1 | Arithmetic mean: add the values and divide by their count. |
| S2 | For an odd count, the median is the middle value after sorting. |
| S3 | Practice values: 1, 2, 3, 4, 20. |
3. Ask for evidence before a replacement
Open the shared prompt, add your reference and first attempt, and ask for a sentence-level comparison. Require a short exact excerpt and a matching source ID. “Unclear” should mean that something needs clarification, not that the whole explanation is wrong.
In the practice case, E1 describes the median in S2, not the mean in S1. E2 should be checked using S1 and S3. Do not accept a claim that the entire topic is understood just because these two sentences were reviewed.

4. Answer a question and use a small hint
Ask for one question at a time. A useful first question is: “Which definition uses addition and division?” A next step can ask you to calculate the sum and count. Try before requesting the completed explanation.
If stuck, ask for a small hint such as identifying the operation to use. A friendly AI response is not proof that your answer is correct; compare the calculation or definition yourself.
| Gap | A question to work on |
|---|---|
| Mean and median are swapped. | Which source defines the middle ordered value? |
| The calculation is not shown. | What are the sum and the number of values? |
| A condition is missing. | Does this median definition cover an even count? |
5. Revise the specific sentence yourself
Return to the reference and rewrite the part that was inconsistent. For the practice data, the sum is 30 and there are five values, so the arithmetic mean is 6. The middle ordered value is 3, the median. These values were checked directly; they are not an AI-generated estimate.
Keep the old and new sentences together and note what changed. Ask ChatGPT whether the identified issue is resolved, with the same source requirements. A missing condition should remain visible instead of being filled with an unsupported rule.
6. Try a small change and review the process
Change 20 to 5, giving 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and work through both definitions yourself. Equal results in that case do not make the procedures identical. Explain the steps, not just the two final numbers.
Stop after one manageable review and choose a later opportunity to explain the concept again. This is a practice routine, not a promise of a particular memory gain or grade.
- Can you explain the meaning without copying the reference?
- Do definitions retain their conditions?
- Can you connect each factual correction to a source?
- Have you tried the calculation or example yourself?
- Do unsupported points remain marked for checking?
