Build a Reusable Character Limit Checker with Claude Artifacts
A short application answer, profile introduction, or notice may need several revisions before it fits a limit. A reusable counter lets you paste each revision, change the limit, and immediately see how much room remains.
Claude Artifacts can help you build that small tool without starting with programming knowledge. The useful result is an interface you can reopen tomorrow, with counting rules you have checked yourself. This walkthrough describes a proposed tool and its acceptance tests; it does not report a live Claude build.
Start with one job and a clear counting rule
Keep the first version simple: one text box, an editable positive whole-number limit, a live count, and a status showing remaining characters or characters over the limit. Include Clear and Load sample buttons. Do not automatically shorten, trim, or block the text, because you need to inspect an over-limit draft.
Define “character” before building. For this version, use Unicode code points, including spaces and line breaks. Normalize Windows and older Mac line endings to a single newline for counting, without rewriting the pasted text. A simple emoji such as 😀 counts as one; some combined emoji contain multiple code points. This is a stated rule, not a promise to match every website. The JavaScript string iterator reference explains why code points and visually combined characters can differ.
If the destination counts bytes, uses a different emoji rule, or excludes spaces, this counter needs a different specification. Compare a short sample against the destination’s own counter before relying on it.
Ask Claude for an interactive artifact
Sign in to Claude on the web or desktop and start a chat. According to the current Artifacts help page, creating artifacts is available on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Cloud code execution and file creation must be enabled in Settings > Capabilities, or the organization’s capability settings. On a managed account, an administrator may control access to that setting.
Use the reusable character checker prompt. It asks for a small interactive artifact plus a self-contained HTML file, with no external libraries, network calls, AI requests, or stored drafts. These are requirements for the generated tool, so verify the delivered file rather than assuming they were followed.
Ask for clearly labeled controls, readable status text instead of color alone, and a layout that works on a narrow screen. Use a fictional sample while building; an actual application answer is unnecessary.
Test the behavior before trusting the total
The following are illustrative acceptance tests for the specified counting rule, not observed Claude results. Set the limit to five:
- Empty input: count 0, remaining 5, and no error.
abcde: count 5 and “At limit”;abcdef: count 6 and “Over by 1.”a, including both spaces: count 3. Nothing is silently trimmed.A, then one line break, thenB: count 3. Windows-style line endings should produce the same count.한글😀: count 3.👍🏽: count 2 under the code-point rule.
Also try a blank, zero, negative, or decimal limit. The tool should show a validation message, not a reassuring pass. Clear should reset the text and result; changing the limit should update the status immediately. Report any mismatch with the exact input, expected result, and displayed result, then rerun the tests after a fix. The same habit underlies checking AI answers.
Keep a copy you can reuse
Download the generated HTML file and open it in your browser. Review its code for the requested absence of network calls and stored drafts; get help reviewing unfamiliar code. Repeat the tests, then reload it with the network disconnected to check that its basic controls still work. Anthropic’s Artifacts overview describes exporting work, including HTML, but the export options depend on the artifact type; explicitly request the standalone file if needed.
Keep the blank tool and your counting rule together. You can return to the Artifacts tab for revisions, but a working downloaded copy makes everyday checks quick. Finish by pasting your real text into the intended destination and checking its final total.
