ChatGPT Shift Availability: Check Overnight Work and Travel
Check the whole appointment footprint
An appointment can fit on a calendar while its travel time conflicts with work or falls outside a window you have confirmed as available. For ChatGPT shift availability checks, supply explicit dates and compare the appointment plus your before-and-after buffers against your own constraints.
OpenAI’s October 7, 2026 update highlighted visual comparisons and interactive answers in ChatGPT. Here, a plain table is enough to inspect the supplied times and constraints; the workflow does not depend on a dedicated scheduling widget.
You can use pasted text and a simple result table without a connected Calendar app. This workflow checks proposed times; it does not book an appointment or write a calendar event. The example below is fictional editorial material, with independently calculated expected results, not a reported ChatGPT test.
Date both ends of an overnight shift
Write a full start and end timestamp for every work block, unavailable block, confirmed available window and candidate. A shift that starts on October 19 and finishes on October 20 needs both dates. If an end time looks earlier than a start time and its date is missing, ask for the end date instead of assuming the next day.
For this fictional example, the user explicitly confirms Asia/Seoul and the +09:00 offset for every example date. Keep the source identifiers S1, S2 and S3 so each result can point back to the exact supplied interval. S2 is time the user has marked unavailable; its purpose and length are their choice.
Time zone: Asia/Seoul. User confirms +09:00 for all example dates.
S1 = 'Night shift: 2026-10-19T22:00:00+09:00 to 2026-10-20T06:00:00+09:00.'
S2 = 'My unavailable time: 2026-10-20T06:00:00+09:00 to 2026-10-20T14:00:00+09:00.'
S3 = 'My confirmed available window: 2026-10-20T14:00:00+09:00 to 2026-10-20T20:00:00+09:00.'
Confirm buffers, available windows and boundary rules
The example user supplies a 30-minute buffer before and a 30-minute buffer after each appointment and confirms that these estimates cover all preparation and travel they want included. Subtract the first buffer from the appointment start and add the second to its end. Compare that expanded interval, not just the meeting itself.
The user also confirms a boundary rule: intervals include their start and exclude their end. Touching an endpoint is allowed, so an expanded appointment starting at 14:00 can follow S2, which ends at 14:00. An expanded appointment must fit wholly inside a confirmed available window and overlap no work or unavailable block.
Ask ChatGPT to show its parsed inputs and wait for your explicit confirmation of the dates, offsets, buffers, windows and boundary rule before comparing candidates. A blank space between blocks is not automatically available. Missing information stays pending: do not silently use a zero buffer or invent an available window.
Compare three candidates with the same rules
All candidate and expanded times in the table are on October 20, 2026, with the explicitly confirmed offset +09:00. C1 is 2026-10-20T05:30:00+09:00 to 2026-10-20T06:30:00+09:00; C2 is 2026-10-20T14:30:00+09:00 to 2026-10-20T15:30:00+09:00; C3 is 2026-10-20T19:00:00+09:00 to 2026-10-20T20:00:00+09:00.
These expected results follow directly from the supplied intervals and two 30-minute buffers. C2 passes at the 14:00 boundary. C3 shows why checking only the meeting time misses a conflict with the end of an available window.
On a small screen, swipe the table to see all columns.
| Candidate: Oct 20, +09:00 | Expanded interval: Oct 20, +09:00 | Constraint check | Expected result |
|---|---|---|---|
| C1: 05:30–06:30 | 05:00–07:00 | Overlaps S1 05:00–06:00 and S2 06:00–07:00; outside S3. | Fails provided constraints |
| C2: 14:30–15:30 | 14:00–16:00 | Wholly inside S3; no S1/S2 overlap. S2 ends exactly at 14:00. | Passes provided constraints |
| C3: 19:00–20:00 | 18:30–20:30 | No S1/S2 overlap; extends 30 minutes beyond S3, which ends at 20:00. | Fails provided constraints |
Leave unresolved candidates pending
If a date, time zone, end time, buffer or available window is missing, ask a specific question. Compare only candidates whose required inputs and rules are explicitly confirmed. Keep unresolved candidates in a separate pending list with the missing fact identified.
For multiple time zones or daylight-saving ambiguity, verify full timestamps and the applicable time-zone rules before comparing. Do not convert a future appointment using a location’s current UTC offset. If a stated offset conflicts with its named time zone, resolve the conflict first.
Keep S1–S3 and the candidate identifiers in the output. For each resolved candidate, request its expanded timestamps, the overlap intervals or window boundary that decides the result, and a plain pass-or-fail explanation. Independently check the arithmetic against your original inputs.
Use the shortlist as a check, then verify before arranging
A passing candidate satisfies the constraints you supplied. It does not guarantee availability: travel estimates can change, other commitments may be missing, and other people’s availability has not been established.
In this example, C2 is the only candidate ready for your final verification. Confirm that your blocks and travel estimates still apply and check with the other participants before arranging anything. Do not treat a model-generated shortlist as an actual reservation.
