ChatGPT Receipt Photos: Create an Expense Table You Can Check

Monthly budget planning with financial reports, calculations, and expense review

Start with a readable receipt image

ChatGPT’s October 1, 2026 release notes announced a rollout of Scan on iOS: open Camera, use the three-dot menu, and select Scan to combine captured pages into a PDF. If Scan is not visible, use a normal receipt photo. For a receipt-to-table workflow, a clear JPG or PNG is a useful starting point. Image inputs are available on Free and paid plans, subject to limits and account settings.

A scanned PDF is not guaranteed to be readable in every chat. OpenAI documents visual retrieval for Enterprise PDFs; other plans and document types use digital text rather than embedded images. If ChatGPT cannot read your scan, attach the receipt directly as an image. Photograph the whole receipt upright, keep totals sharp, and remove unnecessary personal or payment details without removing the fields you need.

Extract the source before building the table

Ask for a first-pass extraction with source anchors and a checking list. Preserve printed monetary strings, currency, quantities, units, and date text. Keep unreadable fields unknown: an unreadable paid amount is not zero. A date such as 03/04 needs confirmation before conversion to a calendar date.

Check the currency rather than inferring it from a symbol, and ask how discounts and tax apply if the receipt does not say. Separate receipt facts from categories you add, such as office supplies. Clear formatting does not prove accurate reading; unclear or rotated images can produce errors. Check Korean or other non-Latin receipt text especially carefully.

Check a small example against its source

This fictional receipt is manually supplied text, not a photograph upload or an OCR test. Its five anchors make the extraction easy to review:

[R1] ‘HARBOR DESK | Currency: USD | Date: [unreadable]’

[R2] ‘Notebook | 2 ea | Unit price 3.50 | Line total 7.00’

[R3] ‘Pens pack | 1 ea | Unit price 4.00 | Line total 4.00’

[R4] ‘Discount on items above: 1.00 | Tax added after discount: 0.80’

[R5] ‘Total: 10.90 | Paid: [unreadable]’

On a small screen, swipe the table left or right to see all columns.

Source anchorExtracted readingCheck or unresolved item
[R1]HARBOR DESK; USD; date unknownConfirm the date from the original.
[R2]Notebook: 2 ea at 3.50; line 7.002 × 3.50 = 7.00 USD.
[R3]Pens pack: 1 ea at 4.00; line 4.001 × 4.00 = 4.00 USD.
[R4]Discount 1.00; tax added 0.807.00 + 4.00 − 1.00 + 0.80 = 10.80 USD.
[R5]Printed total 10.90; paid unknownPrinted minus computed total = 0.10 USD; recheck source.

Keep the discrepancy visible until you confirm it

The computed total is 10.80 USD, while the supplied receipt says 10.90. Keep both values. The difference does not establish an overcharge: the original may have a missing line or another detail to check. Never silently replace the printed total with the calculation or guess a plausible unclear digit.

Compare the draft with the original receipt, then confirm or correct each flagged field. Arithmetic checks clear operands; it does not verify a photograph. If the date or paid amount still cannot be read, keep it unknown in the final table.

Confirm the draft, then export an editable table

After your review, request the confirmed expense table. Keep receipt summaries separate from item details: never add a receipt total to its item amounts. Distinguish total due, paid amount, money tendered, and change; avoid applying tax or discounts twice if already included. Label added categories separately. Request TSV or CSV for spreadsheet import, then check currency and decimal strings.

The shared prompt stops after extraction and the checking list. Once you confirm the readings, it builds the table while retaining unresolved fields and source anchors.
